How the city portion works
The Board of Commissioners sets the city portion of the property tax rate as part of the annual budget. Property values themselves are assessed by Surry County, and the county's tax office collects both the city and county portions on a combined bill.
Annual budget cycle
- January – March: Department requests submitted to City Manager.
- April: Proposed budget submitted to the Board.
- May – June: Public hearings and Board deliberations.
- Late June: Board adopts the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
